For a synthetic turf system to be included on the list of sports products, it must comply with the technical regulations for the respective sport. To this end, the entire system is tested for its performance and safety-related properties. For soccer, these include, for example:

• Force absorption (protective function: shock absorption)
• Energy return
• Vertical deformation
• Ball bounce behavior
• Ball roll behavior
• Rotational resistance (measurement of stress on joints and ligaments)
• Skin friction (coefficient of friction) 
• Linear friction (slip in the longitudinal direction) 
• Fire behavior

In addition, depending on the sport, NOC*NSF specifications include individual tests of the following components:

• Synthetic turf
  • Total weight, fiber weight, fiber pull-out strength, fiber height, determination of fiber material, strength of the adhesive bond, etc.
• Synthetic turf field markings
  • Identification of fiber material
• Stabilizing infill
  • Particle size distribution, particle shape, bulk density
• Sports-grade infill
  • Determination of material, particle size distribution, wear resistance, bulk density
• Elasticizing Layer
  • Force dissipation under various conditions, (tensile) strength of the elasticizing layer, resistance to compressive loading, resistance to repeated impact loading, dimensional stability, mass, bulk density

The KNVB requires rigorous inspections of the various components - from the subbase to the finished playing field - as part of the certification process. 

Depending on whether the project involves new construction or renovation, the certification process for a playing field begins with an inspection of the subbase. 

For new construction projects, the process begins with an inspection of the subbase (Onderbouw), during which, in addition to layer thickness, functional properties such as static and dynamic stability - as well as material properties upon request - are assessed. 

For all projects, the base course (fundatie) is inspected, with unbound and bound base courses required to meet different specifications. 

The finished playing field is then inspected in accordance with the sport-specific guidelines of the NOC *NSF. For soccer, for example, starting with the installation of the synthetic turf, including the application of the stabilizing infill, all components of the synthetic turf system (turf, infill, and elasticizing layer) as well as the functionality of the synthetic turf system are tested. In addition, the field markings, goals, slope, and safety clearances are inspected in accordance with NOC*NSF specifications. Competitions may only be held on the respective playing field once certification has been granted.
